Billy was a good friend to me while we shared the end of our days in Homewood.. I remember the fun we had, the laughter we shared and I remember his smile. It began on the right side of his mouth. Most times it spread full across his face but it always started with that mischievous sly up right corner.
We always found laughter in whatever we were doing. I didn’t know many of my Classmates well but everyone i saw in his company loved Billy.
As retired old men we lived close enough to visit. He loved the things that grew on the thirteen acres surrounding his big old house in Greenville, NY. At least 10 years ago i first visited him there.
His physical problems had already started. They were complicated and evolved as time passed but I never heard a complaint. That day he was full of ideas for planting on the property. He was still Billy and he still had that smile.
Later that year he visited our PA lake house. Sitting on our deck, my late Diana and I delighted as his four energetic dachshunds ran and climbed over us and our two puzzled Bernese Mountain Dogs.
Gradually, he revealed glimpses into his life and the living he built from his variety of artistic talents.. I’d seen him acting in tv commercials and found out about his modeling career on his Facebook wall.
In conversation, he always brushed those aside to talk about other things in his life. I did hear a bit about his stint as a greeting card artist and his flower arranging.
I will always grateful for his company and what he shared but still wonder if he kept mysteries behind that half sly smile.
In my last message from him last fall he spoke of getting bulbs in the ground for Spring. I don’t know if he got that done.
I do know that no Spring will come too late to be thankful and remember Billy again when bulbs become flowers...no matter where they grow.
