Congratulations to the classes of 1960 and 1961!!!  Your contributions to the H-F 60-61 Alumni Award have served to award $3000 each to three wonderful Homewood-Flossmoor seniors!  The Honors Convocation ceremony was held at H-F on May 25, at which time these three worthy students, along with many of their fine classmates, were honored by the high school.

As you know, our definition of a “worthy” student starts with financial need, but criteria also included academic standing and overall character.  We sought to honor students who have been identified as having such qualities as perseverance, honesty, integrity, leadership, critical and creative thinking, service, and intellectual curiosity - students who show potential to make a difference, in addition to excelling academically.

We are proud to announce our award winners, three students who embody these qualities and who exemplify these lofty criteria.  Left to right in the picture below, they are Mia Larrieu, Julian Johnson, and Anuoluwapo Osideko.

Anu, pictured below with her mom, has been Secretary, President and Executive Board President of the Student Government, was active in peer mediation, Friends of the Library, and several clubs during her four years.  Active in the community, she has done work for the Greater Chicago Food Depository and Habitat for Humanity.  She has also volunteered at a local retirement home to read and play bingo with the seniors.  Her immense appreciation for her education at H-F leads her to want to repay what she received there, and to see college as increasing her chances “of getting a career, not a job.”  She intends to pursue her goal of opening up health clinics in the U.S. and in different third world countries, specifically for the treatment of sexually transmitted disease.  She will attend the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

Julian, shown below with his dad, is currently captain of the H-F track team.  He has also run cross-county, been a member of the school’s gospel choir, the Zoo Bot club, and V.I.C.T.O.R.S., a male leadership group that mentors underclassmen.   In the community, his church has been an important source of strength for him as he has been a member of the Hospital ministry, and the Drama ministry, in addition to his gospel choir’s Praise Team.  He has also been part of the ZOE Male Step Fraternity and P.A.N.I.C., a dance troupe.   His personal story involves overcoming some significant challenges that indicate his remarkable ability to persevere, to excel, to trust in himself and to insist on his own success where obstacles may make it appear unlikely.  He will attend Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. where he hopes to major in criminal justice.

Mia, below with her mother, carries a 3.7 GPA that reflects her academic accomplishments that are balanced by her highly recognized excellence in cross-country and track (4 years).  She has been a member of the H-F Environmental Vikings club, the Zoo Bot Club, the Spanish National Honor Society and the Key club, a community service organization.  She loves school and has immersed herself in her studies, school activities, volunteering, and athletics.  Her scholarly interest is Biology, with an emphasis on Animal Behavior/Nutrition, as she hopes to be a scientist who can help plan a course of recovery and prevention of world environmental crises.   She will attend the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
